What's On

What's On In Christchurch

Christchurch is currently what's called a 'transitional city'. There's a lot of change happening. That's allowing innovation to flourish. It can be hard to keep up! Our staff will fill you in on the latest - what's happening and what's opening. There's plenty of choice for visitors.

Some bars that our staff love are Boo Radley's and The Bog, simply for their great atmosphere and yummy food. These are both within a few minutes walk from Dorset House. We recommend music venues such as Darkroom and the Monday Room and the revival of long-time favourite the Dux de Lux as Dux Live.

Gap Filler - revitalising Chch one project at a time

Gapfiller
Gapfiller
 - a grassroots community organisation, they started out with a good idea and are now a registered charity. They borrow demolition sites from the landowners for art displays or community projects, and set these up with the help of an army of volunteers.

Past projects include a bicycle-powered movie theatre, the Dance-O-Mat, the community book exchange fridge (still open!), and and outdoor bowling alley. In Lyttelton the community loved Gapfiller's Petanque Club so much they persuaded the City Council to make it permanent.

Many long-established classic Christchurch activities and tours are going strong.  Try boating on the Avon river at the Antigua Boatsheds; or if you don't want to row the boat yourself, you can relax on a traditional punt and let someone else do the hard work.

If you've been waiting to lay eyes on a Kiwi then try one of our wildlife parks Willowbank (which also offers Maori cultural evenings) or Orana Park.

You can take a look around at the city, the beaches and the hills on one of several great tours - try Hasslefree Tours Double Decker London Bus Discover Christchurch trip for a fantastic deck-top experience that takes in the city, the hills and the seaside village of Sumner beach. Or catch the bus through the tunnel to the gorgeous alternative art-food-craft port community of Lyttelton (their farmer's market is well worth a visit).
